Pittsburgh Project To Include Manmade Crystal Lagoons Amenity

17 December, 2018 / News

As of Dec. 13, Pittsburgh is one step closer to having the United States’ first multi-season, urban Crystal Lagoons® amenity.

At the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s public hearing on Thursday, the Pittsburgh-based property developer Millcraft Investments unveiled further details of the ambitious Esplanade project, which is to bring a 15-acre mixed-use living and recreation space to the Chateau neighborhood on the North Side. The project is set to be the first of its kind as it will include a crystalline lagoon, which will freeze during the colder winter months, which will allow for ice-skating.

“We want to make sure we are bringing amenities that can be utilized year-round, while also activating our city’s riverfront and in an area that has not seen significant development,” said Lucas Piatt, president, and chief operating officer of Millcraft Investments.

With approval for the next phases of the project, construction should begin in 2019 with an eye towards a 2023 opening.

The enormous, multi-season “urban lagoon”

If all goes according to plan, this two-acre, urban Crystal Lagoon amenity will be the first in the world capable of turning from a “paradise-like turquoise body of water” with swimming, kayaking and white sand beaches into a frozen skating rink during the winter months.

Crystal Lagoons is an international innovation company, founded by scientist Fernando Fischmann, which has developed a patent-protected technology that allows the construction and maintenance of unlimited-size clear water lagoons at very low costs.
