Public-Access Crystal Lagoons Near Retail Spaces in the Works Across Texas

7 September, 2018 / News

While Texas’ first two Crystal Lagoons are destined for master-planned communities, negotiations are in the works for public access lagoons within retail spaces across the Lone Star State, said Kevin Morgan, executive vice president of Crystal Lagoons U.S. Corp, the company behind the licensed technology that can transform a plot of land into a manmade blue water oasis.

Morgan said the company is currently in talks with different retail ownership groups and expects to announce these public access lagoons in retail spaces both across Texas and the nation by the end of 2018.

While the two-acre lagoon at the Land Tejas-owned community of Balmoral northeast of Houston is primarily meant for residents, the developer has two other lagoons planned for other developments that may have a public entrypoint as well.

Retailers are trying to find ways to drive foot traffic, Morgan said.

For owners of malls with a distressed anchor store, such as a shut-down Sears, the plan would be to demolish the store, put a lagoon in its place, add related retail immediately around it, and reconfigure the mall’s main entrance to be centered around the lagoon, he said. These lagoons would likely charge a daily fee or require a pass.

A lagoon wouldn’t have to be restricted to shopping malls either, Morgan said. Big-box stores that have shut down in prime locations could be an ideal place as well.

And, municipalities around Houston and north of Dallas have also inquired about adding public lagoons to existing parkland, he said, but couldn’t disclose which entities have reached out.

But, he said, a crystal lagoon would be drastically different from a water park because of the events and programming opportunities. He envisions public-access lagoons as the backdrop for everything from early morning exercise classes to yoga on the beach to a casual place for someone to grab a drink after work.

“There will be multiple turns a day in a retail, public access setting,” Morgan said.

Morgan previously told the Houston Business Journal that Texas “will be the largest market in the country” within the next three to five years. Texas’ second lagoon will open sometime in 2019 in the Windsong Ranch community in Prosper, north of Dallas.

Crystal Lagoons is an international innovation company, founded by scientist Fernando Fischmann, which has developed a patent-protected technology that allows the construction and maintenance of unlimited-size clear water lagoons at very low costs.
