United States Grants Crystal Lagoons Patents That Solves Important Environmental Problem

Crystal Lagoons Corp. obtained patents in the USA for two of its industrial systems. This way, the company has 2 pioneering Chilean innovations that obtained preferential patenting treatment in the United States, thanks to their great ecological impact.

The patents are for a sustainable system for “low cost treatment of water from industrial processes” and for “System for sustainable cooling of industrial processes”. The patents protection was granted in record time by The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), through the fast track program for Green Technologies, that said department implemented from 2009 to 2012. During that period, out of every 1,500 patenting requests presented in the USA, only 1 was approved by this program.

Crystal Lagoons applied in August 2011 to this selective program that only examines technologies that represent a real environmental contribution for the world, such as greenhouse gas emissions, environmental quality, energy conservation and the development of renewable energy resources.

“This patent recognizes our environmental contribution. Very few were able to access this program. In fact, out of every 1,500 patenting requests presented in the USA, only 1 was approved by this program. With this we add up 2 industrial patents in this country, in addition to the patenting of our lagoons for recreational uses, consolidating Crystal Lagoons’ innovation in the USA”, said Kevin P. Morgan, CEO of Crystal Lagoons.

After the approval in the USA, the innovation automatically enters programs for the accelerated processing of patents in the European Patent Office that includes the 30 member countries of that community, in addition to Russia, Israel, China, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, Canada, Mexico and Colombia.

Industrial Water Consumption

The new technology patented in the United States enables significant water savings in industrial processes, thanks to the treatment and purification of great volumes of water resources at low cost. This system has applications in several industries, including the extraction of natural gas, Bio Ethanol, petroleum, cellulose, mining and in the previous treatment of saltwater for Reverse Osmosis desalination processes. Additionally, it will enable the development of industries that, up to now, have not been economically viable due to their high costs, such as the case of ground based fish farming.

Its ecological impact is the progress in one of the mayor difficulties that affect industry worldwide, the exponential consumption of great volumes of water its processes. Said volumes are often left untreated and are disposed off upon natural bodies of water after basic treatments that generate pollution or don’t allow for the reuse of the water resource.
