Fernando Fischmann, founder and President of Crystal Lagoons®, talked to Modern Architect Radio Show at KZSU Stanford University Radio Station (90.1 FM). During the show, the biochemist and businessman talked of the early days, when the concept behind Crystal Lagoons and creating clear turquoise lagoons of unlimited size, was just a dream. After years of research, he created a technology capable of maintaining lagoons of unlimited size in crystalline condition. He also spoke of a new business model the firm is implementing, known as Public Access Lagoons.

“Honestly, I never thought it was going to be so difficult, because my first thought was that the sand can be manufactured. The palm trees can be transplanted, yet the bigger challenge was to have a 22-acre crystal clear lagoon. That didn’t exist anywhere in the world, so I hired a company to develop the technology and we started building our first project,” recalls Fernando Fischmann. However, after a few hiccups, he managed to overcome initial difficulties.

“Everyone thought it was impossible to maintain a lagoon of that size, 22 acres and 10 feet deep, in crystal clear condition. That’s equivalent to 6,000 swimming pools. They’d tell me it was a waste of time, but my money was there. It was one of the most difficult moments of my life, and I thought, the only person that has the pressure to solve this is me”.

Years of research ensued. A phase the founder of Crystal Lagoons describes as “a very lonely period, because everybody thought I was crazy”. However, impulsed him to simply no longer discuss his research, until he finally developed the technology.

“I applied it in this lagoon, and it turned crystal clear from one moment to next. That’s when I realized that this was something that not only solved our problem as a company, but that we had discovered a technology of international projection”.

Today, the multi-national is experiencing a particularly prosperous phase and is seeking to enter a new phase of its famous business model, known as Public Access Lagoons (PAL).
